Booking essential

Immerse yourself in war time history as we learn about the fascinating structures known as the Sound Mirrors (or Listening Ears) situated in the heart of our nature reserve. These magnificent concrete discs provided Britain with an early warning system for aircraft and led to the development of RADAR.

The day will start at our Visitor Centre with a presentation on the beginnings of the Sound Mirrors and the lead-up to their development, with photographs of the construction of the Denge Sound Mirrors back in the 1920s and 30s. We will then take you on a minibus from our presentation room to the site itself and let you get close up to the Sound Mirrors where a guide will talk about the more recent history of the Sound Mirrors and the site they are situated on, now known as Lade Pits.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Please bring lunch for a picnic under the iconic 200ft Mirror wall (weather permitting). These exclusive tours will be limited to a maximum of 10 people.

Please meet at the RSPB Dungeness Visitor Centre, TN29 9PN. Places can be booked either by calling the reserve and paying in advance on 01797 699047 or by booking online through Eventbrite (online booking fees apply).

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Please park outside our Visitor Centre (free parking) which is situated a mile down the track from the entrance to the reserve. There is no bus stop but the 11A bus from Ashford and the 102 from Folkestone and Rye will stop outside the entrance if you make a request to stop at RSPB Dungeness nature reserve.

What can I bring into the event?

Please bring your ticket (if booked through Eventbrite), your membership card (if applicable), a packed lunch and clothing suitable for the weather. We will be spending half the tour outdoors. The area in which the Sound Mirrors are situated is very exposed and there is little shelter.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Please contact the reserve on 01797 320588 and ask to speak to Louise, or email louise.kelly@rspb.org.uk
